KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today met up with PAS leaders in an effort to convince them that PAS members of parliament (MPs) would not be marginalised should the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) form the next federal government.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat information chief Tian Chua said Anwar, who is also PKR advisor, wanted to impress upon PAS leaders, especially its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang that Muslim MPs would not be sidelined if the PR gains power.
"We have to do this before proceeding to the next course of action," he said without revealing what the next course of action would be.
Last week, Anwar issued a Sept 23 deadline to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to call for an emergency Parliament session in an attempt to move a motion of no confidence against the government, claiming that he had 31 Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs in the opposition's fold.
However, Abdullah brushed aside the deadline.
Prior to this latest deadline, Anwar had publicly declared that he would take over the government on Sept 16, but that day passed without event.
In Kota Baru, Anwar told reporters that he was still confident of toppling the BN government.
Asked if he would proceed with the no-confidence motion when Parliament reconvenes on Oct 13, he was non-committal.
He also said PKR had commenced talks with former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, who resigned from the post last week, about joining PKR but no firm decision had been taken as yet.
