KLANG, MALAYSIA: Member of parliament for Klang Charles Santiago got a taste of the dangers of fighting crime when he, his family and staff were ambushed and threatened by 20 thugs outside a temple here at midnight on Saturday.
Though the group claimed to be representing MIC, Santiago believes the attack was related to his anti-crime programme with the Klang Safety Action Committee and police.
The incident occurred when Santiago, his aide Sarah Devaraj and his wife were leaving the Sri Muniandy temple in Taman Kem Port Klang after a function.
Just as they were about to get into Sarah's car, they were accosted by the group.
One of them roughly shoved Sarah on the chest as others climbed onto her car and jumped on it.
Some kicked the front of the car while others smashed the side-view mirrors to prevent Santiago and his entourage from leaving.
One of them also threatened to kill the son of Santiago's friend who was taking pictures of the attack.
"They shouted that they will kill us all and chanted in Tamil 'You all have overthrown Samy Vellu'.
"It had political overtones since (MIC president) Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu's name was mentioned. I'm not sure why they are targeting me as I have nothing to do with Samy Vellu and MIC," Santiago said at the Klang police station.
Fortunately, others at the temple came to Santiago's rescue by pushing away the thugs and clearing a path so that he and his entourage could get into the car and leave.
Santiago said he would not be daunted by the incident and reaffirmed his pledge to make Klang a safe place to live.
"These Indians youths need help and support. These are people who lack hope in society and this is where the government has to play its part by creating sustainable jobs for Indians, especially for the marginalised and underprivileged."
