Khairy gets some competition for Youth top post

By SARBAN SINGH

SEREMBAN: Rembau Umno youth division committee member Azman Mohd Sah said he would challenge incumbent Khairy Jamaluddin if the latter decides to defend the top youth post in the division in the coming party polls.

Azman, also Kg Siliau branch chairman, claimed that he decided to challenge Rembau MP Khairy after eight of the 15 youth committee members in the division urged him to do so.

The 37-year-old father of five alleged that the youths in Rembau have been split since Khairy became their chief.

He said the fact that Umno lost the Paroi state seat and the reduced majority obtained by Khairy in the March 8 election was also testimony to this.

In the 2004 general election, Barisan Nasional's candidate for Rembau Datuk Firdaus Md Rom won with a 18,656 majority while Khairy retained it with a 5,746 majority.

Azman, who was accompanied by three other committee members at a press conference on Sunday, said he was confident of getting the required 28 nominations from the branches to be eligible. The division has 108 branches.

The party polls are scheduled for December.
