PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA: An overwhelming number of The Star readers want the Angkawasan space programme to be shelved because they feel it is a waste of public funds.
An Internet poll conducted by The Star Online yesterday found that the majority of readers felt that the money could be put to better use.
Of the 348 readers who took part in the poll, 291 (83.6% of respondents) said the programme should be shelved, 52 (14.9%) said it should continue, while five were unsure.
"We can use the money for things such as battling the rising cost of living for the lower income groups," said Lynn Fun of Kuala Lumpur.
"It would be better to spend the money on schools and universities," said David Jansz, a 58-year-old retiree in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
Abdul Rahman Koya of Petaling Jaya said the money should go towards providing "proper education for the poor in rural areas, which should be our number one priority."
Those who want the programme to go on felt that it served to inspire Malaysians to greater heights.
"It generates a lot of excitement and awareness (on space exploration) for our children and youth," said a reader, who however wanted funding to come from the corporate sector, rather than taxpayers.
