(The Star) - The country could face a recession worse than the financial crisis of 1998 by next year, said PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said it would be worse because of a combination of a global recession brought on by the internal economic turmoil of the US economy and rising inflation.
Anwar was speaking at a gathering at the state PAS religious centre on Friday.
Although the gathering was organised for Anwar to explain the sodomy allegations against him, he spoke mostly about the economy and why PKR and its partners DAP and PAS wanted to take over the country.
He touched briefly on the allegation, saying he would fight it all the way either in the Syariah (Islamic) system or civil or criminal courts.
He also called on Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia to allow the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, which was filed by the Opposition, for debate.
He said he had nothing personal against Abdullah or his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as he regards both as contemporaries but he is forced to challenge them because they were ruining the country.
