KOTA KINABALU, June 20 — Nearly all 35 supreme council members of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) attended an emergency meeting today to discuss the party's political direction following the declaration by party president Datuk Yong Teck Lee that the party had lost confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The meeting held at the party headquarters in Luyang, near here, would decide whether SAPP would remain as a Barisan Nasional (BN) component party or opt to leave the 14-member coalition.
Yong and deputy president Datuk Raymond Tan, who is likely to challenge Yong's stand of a no-confidence vote against Abdullah, are attending the meeting which began at 10am.
The Sabah-based Chinese-majority party is expected to hold a press conference after the meeting.
Following Yong's declaration, the BN held an emergency supreme council meeting yesterday and decided that no action would be taken against SAPP for the moment as it was not clear whether its call for a no-confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday against the prime minister was a personal view or that of the party. — Bernama
