Muhammad: Action only if they break Umno rules

(Malaysian Insider) KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 ─ Umno will not take any action against members just for voicing their opinion, unless they violate the party's constitution, says Umno information chief Senator Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib.

He said prior to any action, the party's Disciplinary Committee would have study if there was a case to act, told reporters after launching a book “Politik Hantu” at the Sultan Sulaiman Club yesterday.

"I think no action was taken by Umno Youth against some of its leaders and members for voicing their opinions because they were exercising their right to speak up," he said when asked to comment on pressure applied by certain quarters for the party to take action against Umno Youth executive committee member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who has been calling for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign.

Mukhriz, who is Jerlun MP, had also asked Abdullah to step down as Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman.

On whether former Parti Keadilan Rakyat Youth chief Ezam Mohd Noor would be offered any special post if he rejoined Umno, Muhammad, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said: "I'm not in a position to offer him any post. That will depend on the leadership." ─ Bernama
