The Ramadan blast theory

The Ramadan blast theory

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

I was rather shaken to hear from someone in the diplomatic community that the government is anticipating countrywide bomb blast during the month of Ramadan, which will possibly begin from September 3 [subject to moon sight]. There is strong rumor that Islamist millitant groups are getting organized in the country again and gaining strength, leaving potential threat of another attack like August 21 2005, when members of Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh [JMB] exploded bombs in 63 districts in the country. When the rumor of rise of Islamist millitancy is gaining momentum, director general of Rapid Action Battalion [RAB] Hassan Masud has told that Bangladesh has already been able to uproot Islamist millitancy from the country. If someone will take the comments of the RAB director general into serious consideration, it may create confusion in the minds of everyone that either the DG of the elite force is right or the quarter spreading rumor are right. Although the former government succeeded in containing Islamist millitancy after giving patronization to the same to grow for years, Bangladesh is yet to be free from the danger or threat of any notoriety of Islamist millitants. But, it is also true that anticipation of bomb blast during the month of Ramadan has no minimum basis. In this case, question may generate in the minds of people as to why such dangerous rumor is getting circulated domestically and internationally.

Before drawing any conclusion to this point, let us look into some other aspects, which may ultimately draw the curtain of confusion and suspicions.

Few months back, memebrs of notorious Hizb Ut Tahrir and Khelafat Majlish staged serious demonstration in front of the Baitul Mukarram National mosque in Dhaka against government’s initiative in making changes to women rights law. According to religious and social experts, such initiative by the government was basically planted by vested interest group in putting the government into trouble. On the other hand, some quarters are trying to give provocations to Islamist forces in coming out in millitant manner. Initial plan of the conspirators were successful. Baitul Mukarram mosque turned into mere battle fields, leaving numerous devotees and members of law enforcing agencies serious injured. Although there were reports of death, but the matter was some how suppressed due to unknown reason. Some elements in the country, who were basically behind this pre-planned clash between practicing Muslims and the government were totally upset when the situation did not grow worse, but the government, especially some patriotic members of the armed forces handled the situation with their highest zeal and passion. Seeing their evil plan foiled, these conspirators turned extremely upset as well angry. Such anger turned exposed, when a very controversial and questioned female lawyer of Bangladesh named Barrister Tania Amir was invited in a program organized by a vernacular daily in ‘honor’ of visit by daughter of Malaysia’s former leader Mahathir Mohammed to Dhaka. It is a million dollar question in the minds of everyone as to why this newspaper spent huge amount of money in hosting Mahathir’s daughter and gave platform to this questioned lawyer in demanding sedition charges against all the demonstrators, who protested the controversial women rights law. Tania Amir is neither any esteemed social activist nor she is a person having any contribution in combating radical Islam. Nor she does have the qualification to represent the women of Bangladesh. The only qualification she may have is something beyong the standard of publishing in any newspaper.

It may be mentioned here that, Mahathir Mohammed was one of the worst critics of Israel and Jews, who openly supported elimination of Israel from the global map. His daughter, who occassionally writes for a Malaysian newspaper, is not any known name in the world. But, anti Semitic quarters in Dhaka in a planned way invited this woman and gave her almost heroic welcome and hospitality, for reason unknown.
