(MalaysianInsider) BESUT, May 30 ─ Former Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said he stepped down as state Umno liaison committee chairman voluntarily and that he was not pressured by anyone.
Idris, who is Jertih state assemblyman, said he made his decision to ensure that Umno remained strong in Terengganu.
He also said he did not influence Ajil state assemblyman Datuk Rosol Wahid to follow in his footsteps by stepping down as the committee secretary.
"I stepped down from my post and I did not influence anyone to follow me," Idris said when met after a get-together with the Besut MCA division at Gong Kemuntong on Wednesday night.
Both Idris and Rosol on Wednesday announced their withdrawal after holding their respective positions for four years.
Elaborating, Idris said he hoped all state Umno members would understand that his action was taken to maintain party harmony in Terengganu.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said he had not been notified by Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that he was to replace Idris as the state Umno chairman.
Ahmad, the Kijal state assemblyman, said he was leaving it to the Umno president to decide who should fill the position that had been held by Idris for the last four years.
"I do not know who is Datuk Seri Idris's replacement as the state (Umno) liaison chairman... that is up to the party president to decide.
"The question of when... sooner or later that too is not for me to decide," Ahmad said yesterday. ─ Bernama
