Symptoms usually occur suddenly and more than one symptom can occur at the same time.

For neonates - those younger than a month - seizures are the most common symptom.

For older children, the following can be the signs and symptoms of a stroke:

  • Numbness, weakness, paralysis of face, arm, leg or one side of the body.
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Decreased or blurred vision
  • Loss of balance, lack of coordination or dizziness
  • Severe headache
  • Altered consciousness and vomiting

The incidence of childhood stroke among Asians is about two cases per 100,000 children each year.
