Beliefs Are Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Another favorite song is Mariah Carey’s “Hero:”

There’s a hero if you look inside your heart You don’t have to be afraid of what you are.

There’s an answer if you reach into your soul and the sorrow that you know will melt away.

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on and you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive. So, when you feel like hope is gone look inside you and be strong and you’ll finally see the truth that a hero lies in you.

Think of a goal that you want so much for yourself but have not yet achieved and you are wondering why. Why do you make New Year’s resolutions every year only to break it a few days into the New Year?

Ask yourself: What beliefs do you hold about your ability to achieve your goal? What beliefs do you hold about your right to achieve your goal? What beliefs might be limiting you in the achievement of your goal? What beliefs might you hold instead of the limiting ones? Which of the beliefs of excellence do you already hold? Which beliefs of excellence would you like to hold? Which one belief of excellence would make the biggest positive difference to your life if you held it? What do you imagine would be the effect of holding this belief for you? What are you hearing, seeing and feeling?

Making things happen, achieving our goals, realizing our new year’s resolution is not about facts and figures—it is about belief. If we believe we can, we just might. If we believe we can’t, we definitely won’t.

Captain Sully Sullenberger landed that plane safely on the Hudson River and saved the lives of all his crew and passenger because he believed that against all odds, he could get the plane safely down.

Author Sue Knight wrote: Beliefs are emotionally held thoughts about ourselves, others and situations. They are not based on fact but on our perception of events at the time they were formed. In studying figures of excellence we find certain core beliefs underpinning their ability to excel and achieve. These are the beliefs of excellence. We can step into (presuppose) these beliefs and experience the consequences of holding them to be true. By trying them out and finding the ones that work for us, we can, over time, turn them into beliefs for ourselves.

Try this: Think of one of your New Year’s resolution. Pick a belief of excellence that you think would be the most appropriate here. Consider what skills and qualities you have that will help you realize your goal. Picture in your mind your journey into achieving your goal. Appreciate what you’re doing and how you’re feeling. How do you feel about this belief? Decide what you will specifically commit to doing or believing in the future in order for you to make your new year’s resolution happen.

The belief of excellence happens when we believe that there is a hero inside us. A saying goes, You are like a stained-glass window. You sparkle and shine when the sun is out. But when darkness sets in, then beauty is revealed but only if there is light from within. Let your light shine through. Look inside you and be strong because there’s a hero in your heart.
