Doesn't sound keen on 'patch up' meeting with Dr M
PUTRAJAYA, April 11 — The quota system will maintained at Umno's elections in December, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The prime minister, who is also Umno president, said Umno's supreme council had decided that it would be maintained.
As for having "peace talks" with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, one of his harshest critics, Abdullah said: "Let's see...what are the reasons."
Umno would have to hold an extraordinary general assembly if it wanted the quota system changed, he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the National Council on Islamic Religious Affairs yesterday.
Under the system, a presidential aspirant needs at least 30 per cent or 57 of the 191 divisions in the party to nominate him or her. For the deputy president's post it is 20 per cent (38 divisions), vice-president 10 per cent (19 divisions) and supreme council member five per cent (10 divisions).
Umno's general assembly this year will be held from Dec 16 to 20.
On the move to allow campaigning by candidates this time around, Abdullah said he hoped they would go about it in a good way.
He said previously campaigning was disallowed as it had led to a lot of problems like candidates using underhanded tactics to gain an advantage over rivals.
Asked about the possibility of money politics surfacing, Abdullah said Umno abhorred this as it was dangerous for the party. — Bernama
