Johor Bahru, Malaysia: Chaos broke out at the remand prison here yesterday evening when some 260 detainees attacked the warders.

Prison and police officials declined to say if there were any casualties in the incident which was brought under control some five hours later when Federal Reserve Unit personnel were sent into the compound.

The drama began at 5.30pm when the warders were registering new detainees who had arrived after their court hearing.

A scuffle broke out between the detainees and warders and soon the riot spread to other sections of the prison.

Prison authorities and police initially tried to negotiate with the detainees but they barricaded themselves in their prison blocks.

The situation at the remand prison, popularly known as the Air Molek Prison, remained tense until the FRU arrived about 9pm.

The prison houses more than 400 detainees held under the Emergency Ordinance Act.

It was initially believed that the FRU unit was about to storm the prison upon their arrival. They were, however, ordered to stand down.

Some of the personnel were seen taking off their protective gear about 30 minutes later.

At press time, it could not be ascertained how many people were injured.
