Malaysia's opposition figurehead to continue bid to overthrow government

Malaysian opposition figurehead Anwar Ibrahim says he would press ahead with a campaign to topple the government.

He says he has parliamentary backing to bring down the government including senior defectors from the ruling coalition.

Claiming to have the numbers to secure a simple majority, Mr Anwar says it's now a question as to when to move on a no confidence motion.

He says he would continue the campaign against the government even if the prime minister quits.

Earlier on friday prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he had reached an agreement with his deputy Najib Razak over the timing of a leadership change.

The prime minister has been facing calls for him to step down after a major electoral setback in March.
