KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Four men, including a juvenile, claimed yesterday that they were tortured and molested while under remand in the Kajang police headquarters a few weeks ago, reports Bernama. The men, who were detained from May 29 to June 4, claimed the police beat them, sprayed insecticide on their faces and forced the detainees to lick their shoes.

The juvenile said a police sergeant forced him to perform oral sex on another inmate. At the time, the men were detained in connection with a gang robbery case.

The allegations were revealed by Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) lawyer S. Karthigesan, who is representing the four, at a press conference at Suhakam's office here yesterday. Also present was Suhakam commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam.

Karthigesan said there were five police personnel behind the torture and abuse and added that his clients lodged a police report on the matter at the Dang Wangi police station on June 11.

Siva Subramaniam said Suhakam took the matter very seriously and had sent a letter to the Kajang police headquarters demanding information and an explanation.

"We received an official letter about the matter from the detainees' lawyer on June 11 and sent the letter to the Kajang police two days later. This is a gross violation of basic human rights and we want the personnel investigated and the proper action taken."

Meanwhile, Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shakaruddin Che Mood told the New Straits Times three officers were being investigated.

"We are awaiting further instructions from the state police headquarters," he said, adding that the officers were still carrying out their normal duties pending further investigations.
