A magnitude 5.8 aftershock rattled the Chinese earthquake area on Sunday, causing office towers to sway in Beijing, 1,300 kilometres away.

The aftershock, in the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu, lasted only about 20 seconds
but destroyed tens of thousands of homes.

The building collapses killed two people. More than 480 others were injured.

Recovery efforts from the country's worst earthquake in three decades are being strained, with the news that nearly 70 dams are in danger of bursting in the Chinese earthquake zone.

The Water Resources Ministry said in a statement on the weekend that 69 dams in central Sichuan province were in danger of collapse. It did not give further details.

The government had earlier said the quake affected 391 dams, mostly small structures.

Looming rains are adding to worries by engineers who are on permanent stand-by to ensure the dams remain stable.

Premier Wen Jiabao said on the weekend that the number of dead in the Chinese earthquake could surpass 80,000.
